A narrative approach to working with couples – one day workshop presented by Elize Morkel, Somerset West on 23 May 2019.
Relationship work can be extremely challenging as people often seek help for their relationships when the relationship has already suffered a lot of damage and injury and hope for the future of the relationship may be very limited. Joining couples who find themselves in conflict is problematic as therapists are often invited into taking sides. Narrative therapy offers language and conversational practices that move away from individualised views of couples and their problems. Narrative therapists are skilled at joining couples in looking at the ways in which cultural beliefs and practices influence their relationship. They are also focussed on the relationship knowledges and skills that couples bring and collaborate with couples in order to make these knowledges and skills visible and newly available. This assists couples to move in the direction of the hopes and dreams that they have for their relationships.
In this one day workshop a basic knowledge of Narrative Therapy will be assumed and participants will look at the theory and practices that will assist them in taking up a collaborative position with couples in viewing their relationship and the challenges it faces.
