Janet Bytheway

janetQualifications: M. Psych. (UWC) Clinical Psychologist HPCSA Reg. No. 33456

Personal description:

I was trained as a clinical psychologist at University of the Western Cape and Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital and started in private practice in 1992. At Janet Bytheway & Associates, my colleagues and I offer our services to children, adolescents, families and adult individuals. I have a special interest in working with families facing complex challenges (i.e. children and adults living with chronic conditions) and families where high levels of conflict are present. I am a FAMAC accredited mediator.

In the early 1990’s, while still training, Michael White presented his work at with ‘sneaky poo’ at the Centre for Family Therapy. The seed was sown but it was to be a number of years before I was reunited with Narrative ideas and thinking. In 2003, when Elize bought Michael White to South Africa I was ripe and ready for these ideas. Little did I know, that I would need to take an unlearning journey of all the years of training and 11 years of practice, before I was able to take narrative therapy ideas into my work. Since this time I have been involved in Elize’s consultation groups and have been exposed to the many international teachers that have been brought here through Elize’s training programme. Narrative therapy ideas and thinking has opened up spaces to work that before seemed inaccessible.

In 2006, a small group of volunteers and I founded Kidz Voices (previously The Play Therapy Team). It is a community project that offers counselling and support via therapeutic play to children who might not otherwise have access to therapeutic services. Volunteers are trained to become child support workers and offer these services in local schools. A group of volunteers and I co-ordinate the project . Once a year we train a new group of volunteers.
